Wedding Dress Preservation Methods

Searching for the perfect wedding dress is no small task. For some women it has been delightful and nearly lifelong endeavor. As the wedding day approaches there are the countless hours of intense research studying bridal fashion magazines and reviewing the latest Hollywood weddings. For some it all adds up to hundreds or even thousands of hours. Even though you have already spent so much joyful personal investment shopping the bridal stores, trying on numerous dresses, gathering your best friends opinions, and stressing about the $2000 dollar price tag do not stop there. Preserving your prized wedding dress after your special day takes some careful consideration as well.

Unless you have decided to trash the dress the options you will be looking at are sealing, boxing, or bagging. Sealing involves placing the dress inside an airtight padded box using cardboard cutouts and acid free tissue paper to preserve the shape. The thought behind sealing is that by making the package airtight the dress will be protected from the elements, however this lack of airflow creates a risk of mold and mildew. A long term storage method such as this can also cause permanent creasing at the folds. It is also quite expensive.

Boxing your dress is similar to sealing. These boxes are usually acid free and often lined with fabric. The difference is that the box is not sealed and you can access the dress easily any time. Seams and folds are looser so there is less risk of creasing, however a boxed dress should be periodically refolded and placed back into its container to avoid permanent creases.

Bagging is the method often used to preserve antique clothing in museums. Here the dress is hung from padded metal hangers and twill string or tape is used to reinforce and support the dress as it hangs, which is critical to reduce stretching. Once the dress is properly supported an all cotton outer bag usually between 5 and 6 feet in length slides over the whole dress.

Boxing or bagging your dress has other benefits aside from allowing it to breath. The best reason perhaps is that it allows you to easily inspect and refold the dress as you revisit memories as often as you wish. Do it yourselfers can purchase boxing or bagging kits that provide you with all the packing supplies, hangers, and instructions you will need to properly store and care for you garment over the years.

There are literally thousands of wedding gowns that a new bride can choose from. Brides can choose to have a traditional wedding gown or a modern form-fitting gown made of satin with sequin or pearl decorations. No matter what the bride decides, she will most likely have to visit a wedding gown dealer.

When visiting the wedding gown salon or boutique of your choice, you should make sure that you know what your wedding theme is going to be. You should also not hesitate to let the wedding salon know that you have a certain budget. Make sure that you have a wedding dress picture with you depicting you favorite wedding gown. You may have to look through several magazines and clip out several wedding dress pictures to see if they have that particular style of something similar. It is true that with most bridal salons you will get a free consultation. The wedding consultant will give you suggestions on style and fit based on your body type and age. There may be a beautiful wedding dress picture that looks absolutely stunning, but it may not look as good on you.

You would choose a wedding dress pattern in much the same way as you would choose a wedding gown from a designer boutique. Try to find a style that suits your body type and your taste. There is one thing you should keep in mind. You will not be able to try on the dress before your purchase it in the way that you would if you were shopping at a bridal salon. Keeping this in mind, try to choose a style that you know would look just perfect on you. One of the best ways to find just the right pattern is to go to the websites of different pattern makers or call them to request that a catalog be sent of their wedding dress patterns. When you finally have all of the catalogs, start thumbing through them until you find just the right dress for you. Remember that once you have chosen the pattern and cut the fabric there is no turning back.

The next question you may ask is where you would find a wedding dress pattern. You should go to a fabric store to familiarize yourself with the different pattern makers.

Simplicity Patterns has been around for generations. It would only make sense that they would have some beautiful wedding dress patterns.

Vogue Patterns also offers a small selection of wedding dress patterns. They range from a full skirted gown to strapless styles that will make you feel like a princess.

Wedding Dress Precautions

the most important garment of your life and by all means the most dearlyWedding dress is very important to your life, because many long times remember to this special day. Your wedding dress in all probability is the most important garment of your life and by all means the most dearly won. Its significance remains for the lifetime. So to a very great extent to preserve your most valuable asset is the main foremost duty. It's not so that once wedding is over you will leave wedding dress simply somewhere lying. Many other occasions will come when you will get chance to wear it again. If not, then also the moment you will have a glance at your dress, those beautiful memories of your most significant day will start dancing in front of your eyes and will take you to some other world.

Special care should be given to it to maintain its elegance and value. The beautiful dress for which you spent months in shopping is hanging like a behemoth in your wardrobe. Its better you start taking proper steps immediately to preserve your wedding dress from the damaging. Below are written few steps, follow them and treasure your most precious thing.

Step 1

Most important first step after the completion of wedding is the proper cleaning and preservation of your wedding dress. It will prevent dress from yellowing, creasing, molding or mildewing, light and dust. There are some companies that offer preservation packages. Within two weeks time the dress is returned to you cleaned and preserved.

Step 2

After cleaning is done, make sure to keep it in a clean place and prevent from food, pen and other such stuffs. Keep your hands clean while handling the dress and do not wear any jewelry that could snag the dress fabric. It's ideal to wear fine cotton gloves.

Step 3

Do not simply wrap your dress and keep in a plastic bag or in a box. It does not provide good protection. Instead, standard plastic/PVC bags or covers are the best place to keep in.

Step 4

Take out all pins, wrappings and hangers from the box you are going to place your dress. Also wrap the dress with the tissue paper and also keep the tissue between every fold. Choose a reliable and archival quality box for your dress. Before shutting the lid of the box, check whether all fabric is covered by acid free tissue.

Step 5

Keep that box in a dark, dust free area where air circulation is proper. Never store it in a shed, garage, in an attic, against an external wall, unheated loft place. Save it from a high humidity, dampness and condensation. Also do not store it near radiator, near bright light or anywhere vulnerable to pets or insects. Practically box should be store in a place having temperature around 13-18 degrees Celsius with a relative humidity of about 50 percent.

Step 6

In a regular period of time frame unpack your wedding dress to reduce the risk of permanent creasing. Again do repacking and keep it back. After doing all this also if problem comes, seek advice from a professional textile conservator.

the costs are built into the price of the gown

You gown price range falls within the average cost of a bridal gown, so there will be many designers to choose from. Take the time to try on gowns, and don just go by the magazine pictures. If a salon tells you the alterations are free, the costs are built into the price of the gown.

I have done bridal alterations for fifteen years, and have worked closely with Jessica McClintock. I worked out of my home, had proper insurance, and my rates were reasonable. I only did wedding and evening gowns. You can find people who do alterations who specialize in bridal gowns. This is important, since it requires a customized fit.

My dress was from maggie Sotero and I loved it! He dresses would probably fit in your price range and I think they are really gorgeous. Mine was on the less expensive side ($530 with the cap sleeves) but it still looked really great. Lots of her dresses have the lace up back rather than buttons or just a zipper.

For alterations I paid about $150, because I gained weight between when I bought it and when it came in (eek!) so she had to let out the sides a bit. If I hadn bought the jewelry I would have worn my mom pear earings and necklace. I used my mom veil but if that haddn worked I would have made one myself for about $30. Shoes I got at payless in their Bridal section (only at select stores) for $15 bucks.

I am really a cheapskate at heart so while it might sound like I just threw stuff together from various stores, the end result still looked awesome (if I do say so myself).

I also liked the dresses at Jasmine Bridal. Really you just need to open the phone book and go by the bridal salons in your area.

Now the two dresses I narrowed it down to were only $30 difference. One was $840 and the other i believe $807-812. Now that included taxes and the veil that I wanted as well. The marked price on the dress I went with was $700.

As far as accessories, that is completely up to you. I see on tv the bride spending $85,000 on jewelry. Many brides I know use a piece of their mother as their something borrowed. My dress was so ornate that I didn do a necklace at all. I wore my engagement ring and my mothers blue tanzanite ring on my right hand. I didn do gloves, I wore shoes I already had as my "something old". The only "accessories" I bought were my hose, garter, earrings and tiara--so perhaps just over $100.

Email me and I show you pictures--they are online. The dress I actually went with did come from David Bridal though so you might not want to see it.

Now alterations were the costly part. Both dresses I got estimates on alterations and both were going to be more than $100 in alterations--and all I had done was hemming and bustle. So if you are really exact in your 1,000 cap, I would say the most your dress can be is $700 (leaving 100 for taxes, 100 for alterations and 100 for accessories). If you need any other alterations (especially along the bodice), you may expect to pay a decent amount more than that.

Now if you live in NYC or California it might be more difficult, but I don think any of the stores I went in to had many dresses more than 1,000. They had to custom order those. Most of their stock was just in the price range you mentioned. Just go to the different bridal stores in your area though b/c you need to figure out what style of dress you like (how embellished/plain, neckline, skirt-ballgown or sleek) before you can limit the price so much. Then you be able to go to stores with a more exact idea in mind.

I haven purchased my dress yet, but I love the designs by Alfred Angelo, Maggie Sottero and Casablanca. Your local bridal shops will carry dresses from certain designers and will have numerous catalogs to look through. They are usually very informed about designers and if you have a specific style in mind they can tell you which designer is best. The only things I purchased so far are my jewelry and my veil, which I got off of ebay for less than $30. I wanted a veil with butterflies and rhinestones and another Y!A member found it for me on ebay. Also ebay has a lot of businesses where they make the dress to your measurements, so they are not used.

My dress was custom made since I couldn find it in a shop. Seamstress charged me $650 for it and since it was custom made for me there were no charges for alterations. Don know who the orginal designer was.

It very similar to the dress Audrey Hepburn wore in Sabrina (1954) except that I had her add three quarter lenght sleeves and the hem is floor length all the way around. Champagne with dark purple design.
